Custom Home in Nashville, TN for Architect - Shot with Hasselblad 500CM Medium Format Film Camera

In early March, I was in Nashville, TN for Shifter Summit, a two day conference all about architectural and interior photography. I was an incredible two days of networking and learning.

The day after the conference, a colleague, based out of Nashville, was heading to a shoot for a local architect and given that I had my medium format camera, the Hasselblad 500CM, with me, I asked if I could join him. I’ve been shooting with that camera for almost 25 years at this point, since my wedding days, but have never photographed an interior or architectural shoot with it.

One of the most appealing aspects of medium format film is the aesthetic quality it brings to architectural photography. The richness of colors and tones, coupled with the distinctive film grain, adds a nostalgic and timeless feel to the images. The medium format film's dynamic range ensures that both highlights and shadows are well-preserved, resulting in balanced and visually striking compositions.

Moreover, the deliberate process of shooting with medium format film encouraged me to slow down and carefully consider each shot, resulting in a more deliberate and thoughtful approach to capturing architectural subjects. The result is a collection of images that not only document buildings but also convey the mood, atmosphere, and essence of the spaces they inhabit.
